ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE

Environmental damage in Indonesia is getting worse. The condition has directly threatened human life. The rate of natural damage also increases the risk of natural disasters. The cause of the occurrence of natural damage can be caused by two factors, namely due to natural events and the result of human activities.

Environmental damage can be interpreted as a process of deterioration or degradation of the environment. This environmental deterioration is characterized by the loss of soil, water, air resources, the extinction of wild flora and fauna, and the destruction of ecosystems.

Environmental damage has a direct impact on human life. In 2004, the United Nations High Level Threat Panel, Challenges and Change, included environmental degradation as one of ten threats to humanity. The World Risk Report released by the German Alliance for Development Works (Alliance), United Nations University's Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2012 also mentioned that environmental damage to be one important factor that determines the height Low disaster risk in a region.

Causes of Environmental Damage

Causes of environmental damage in general can be categorized in two factors, namely due to natural events and the result of human activities.

Volcanic eruptions, floods, abrasion, landslides, tornadoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis are some examples of natural disasters. The disasters are the cause of the destruction of the environment due to natural events. Even if examined further, disasters such as floods, abrasion, forest fires, and landslides may occur due to human intervention as well.

The second cause of environmental damage is the result of human activities. The damage caused by humans is even greater than the damage caused by natural disasters. This is considering the damage done can occur continuously and tend to increase. This damage is generally caused by human activities that are not environmentally friendly such as forest destruction and transfer of forest functions, mining, air pollution, water, and soil and so forth.

Some facts related to the high environmental damage in Indonesia due to human activities include:

-The rate of deforestation reached 1.8 million hectares / year, resulting in 21% of Indonesia's 133 million hectares of forest lost. Forest loss leads to degradation of environmental quality, increased natural disasters, and threatened sustainability of flora and fauna.
-30% of the 2.5 million hectares of coral reefs in Indonesia are damaged. Damage to coral reefs increases disaster risk to coastal areas, threatens marine biodiversity, and reduces marine fisheries production.

- High air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination, and marine pollution in Indonesia. Even in 2010, the Citarum River was once named the World's Most Enchanted River by the huffingtonpost.com site. The World Bank also placed Jakarta as the third highest polluted city after Beijing, New Delhi and Mexico City.

-Hundreds of rare and endangered Indonesian plants and animals. According to IUCN Redlist, 76 species of Indonesian animals and 127 plants are in the highest status of Critically Endangered (Critical) status, as well as 205 species of animals and 88 species of plants belonging to the Endangered category, and 557 animal species and 256 Vulnerable plants.

Nature and the environment become a place to live and live human life. Environmental conditions will directly affect the human condition. Because it is right for us to keep this earth the only one from environmental damage.
